Eastern water dragon (Physignathus lesueurii). This agamid or dragon lizard occurs in eastern Australia from far north Queensland, through New South Wales to Victoria. As the common name suggests, it is usually found in the vicinity of rivers and creeks and is partly aquatic in its habits. It enters the water to escape potential predators and can stay submerged for 10-15 minutes. It forages mainly on the ground but is also a very competent climber and is often found high in trees overhanging water. It grows to a total length of almost a meter (snout-vent around 40 cms). It feeds on vertebrate and invertebrate prey and also berries and fruit. Mt Baldy, Atherton Tablelands, Queensland, tropical northern Australia.
