Horse Lubber (Taeniopoda equis). A very large (38 - 64 mm) grasshopper found in AZ to TX south into Mexico. Some populations, such as one pictured, have small wings and are flightless. When threatened it opens its wings in startle display, warning would-be predators of its noxious flavor. The disc-like structure above the base of its hopping leg is its tympanum.
