Owl butterflies, Calligo illlioneus, feeding on banana. The neotropical owl butterflies are named for the owl-like eye spots on the underside of the hind wings. These markings are thought to deter predators. Owl butterflies are are forest species and unusual in being largely crepuscular. Photographed in the Peruvian Amazon.
