The Mata Mata turtle, Chelus fimbriatus, is an inhabitant of the drainage systems of South America. They can be found on both sides of the Andes in the Orinoco Drainage system and in the Amazon drainage system. They prefer quiet backwaters that move slowly. Mata matas are frequently found on a substrate of submerged leaf litter, with which they blend in almost seamlessly. This specimen was photographed in Amazonian Peru in 2010.
