Eufala skipper butterfly (Lerodea eufala) sitting on the edge of a prickly pear cactus blossom. Family: Hesperiidae. Wingspan: 1 -1 1/4 inches (2.5 -3.2 cm). This skipper was found on the South Crest Trail in the Sandia Mountains. Eggs are laid singly on or near the host plants. The caterpillars feed on the leaves of several plant species, including Johnson grass (Sorghum halepense), Bermuda grass (Cynodon dactylon), and sugar cane (Saccharum offincinarum); they also make shelters of rolled or tied leaves.
