The Amazonian Freshwater River Dolphin or Pink River Dolphin, Inia geoffrensis, ranges through the Amazon and Orinoco River drainages. Males can weigh as much as 160kg. Many Amerindian groups have superstition about killing these creatures and overwhelmingly leave them alone. Mechanized fishing, and overfishing, has put these riverine creatures at risk. They have disappeared from formerly inhabited drainage systems such as the Napo River in Ecuador. This individual was photographed in Amazonian Peru, 2012.
