The Chilean Widemouth Frog, Calyptocephalella gayi, is endemic to central and south Chile. The exotic calls from this species are often heard around permanent bodies of water. This species reaches size enough that it is eaten in some regions of Chile. Owing to harvest and habitat loss, the species is now threatened and recognized by the IUCN as "VU" or vulnerable. There are farms in Chile that now produce the species for human consumption.
