Dr. Louis Leakey (1903-1972) showing the geological level at which the Zinjanthropus boisei skull, nicknamed Nutcracker Man on account of his large molars, was found. The skull was discovered by British anthropologist and archaeologist Mary Leakey (1913-1996) in 1959, in Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania, Africa. The Zinjanthropus boisei is now classified as Paranthropus boisei (and was categorized for a while as Australopithecus boisei). It is an early hominin.
