Galveston Police Department officers are dwarfed by the massive destruction caused by Hurricane Ike's monstrous storm surge that struck the southeast Texas coast on September 13, 2008. Nearly every building on the east side of the seawall was obliterated. Hurricane Ike is the costliest hurricane in Texas history. Hurricane Ike is also the second deadliest U.S. hurricane since 1972.
