More than a million gallons of water, sand and other chemicals are injected at high pressure down directionally drilled wells as deep as 10,000 feet below the surface. The pressurized mixture causes the targeted rock layer, in this case a shale, to crack. The fissures are kept from collapsing by the injected sand so that natural gas can flow up the well. Labeled.
