The Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama was the site of the beginning of the civil rights movement. This church was the headquarters for the 1955-1956 Montgomery bus boycott, which was the first grass-roots demonstration against racial discrimination. The boycott proved that members of the African American community could band together to effectively protest segregation via "direct action". This protest also introduced Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. to the national spotlight.
