The Palacio Barolo (1923), an office building, is the work of Italian architect Mario Palanti (1885-1979) and was once the tallest building in South America. A mixture of architectural styles, including neo-Gothic, neo-Romantic and Art Nouveau, the building's interior has many references to Dante's Commedia, with different parts of the building symbolizing different parts of the poem. A statue of Dante was stolen from the building in 1955 during a coup.
