Woodcut of "Dorothea, pregnant with many children, who, carrying such a great load, was so heavy that she held up her stomach, which hung down as far as her knees, with a great hoop which hung over her neck and shoulder" from Des Monstres et prodiges by Ambroise Par矇, 1573. Des Monstres is filled with unsubstantiated accounts of sea devils, marine sows, and monstrous animals with human faces. With its extensive discussion of reproduction and illustrations of birth defects, the book invited accusations of pornography. Pregnancy with 11 fetuses. Giovanni Pico della Mirandola reported the case of an Italian woman, Dorothea, who allegedly gave birth to undecaplets after having given birth to nonuplets.
