Eviction of members of the Contract Buyers League, in Chicago, 1970. The Contract Buyers League was a group of African-American residents who had joined forces to protest the "contracts" they paid on their houses, in an attempt to get the contracts turned into regular mortgages. At the time, racism made it difficult for black residents to get standard and affordable mortgages. Instead, they had to buy their houses "on contract," and were treated like tenants who could be evicted if they missed a payment. After the CBL members withheld all contract payments in protest, some were evicted.
