The Cycladic Island of Santor穩ni (Th穩ra), Greece has a spectacular caldera with an active volcanic cone in the center. The volcano exploded between 1660 and 1613 BC (according to the latest dating), burying the island in a hail of ashes and slag and sending a devastating tsunami towards Crete, the ruins of ancient Th穩ra. It was founded in the 9th century BC high above the sea and grew in antiquity to a considerable city. Its port Kam獺ri was an important naval base abandoned in the 13th century AD.
