A depiction of Native American medicine entitled "How They Treat Their Sick." A man is shown cutting a patient's forehead with a sharp shell in order to suck out the blood. Women who are nursing or pregnant (far left) "come and drink this blood, especially if it is that of a strong young man" in order to make their children healthier. The patient who is lying face-down is inhaling the smoke of seeds in order to purge the toxins in his body. At the back, a man is smoking a pipe filled with dried tobacco leaves in order to cure his infection. This description was made by Jacques le Moyne, writing from the French Huguenot colony in Florida in 1564-65.
