Title page from the "Wonders of the Invisible World", a book published in 1693 by Cotton Mather. His book gives accounts of the Salem Witch Trials, which took place in the Puritan based town of Salem Massachusetts. As narrator and preacher of the Second Church of Boston, he begins with an explanation of the people of God and how they are living in the devil's territories. He discusses the devil's plan to overturn the plantation and churches with the help of his recruits, which Mather believes are witches. He explains how the witch trials came about and retells the trials as they happened. He only presents evidence against the indicted and not any of the defenses they used in the trial. He was quick to establish conflict of good and evil, and by establishing this conflict he took away any sympathy for the plight of the condemned.
