Illustration of the Grande Hermine, the most celebrated of French ships of the Galleon type; cameos of Jacques Cartier and Francis I, King of France are featured in the margins. This was the ship that brought Jacques Cartier to Saint-Pierre on June 15, 1535, and upon which he discovered the estuary of the St. Lawrence River and the St. Lawrence Iroquoian settlement of Stadacona (near current-day Quebec City).
