Entitled: "Le Sphynx et les pyramides de Cheffren et Myc矇rinus (The Sphinx and the pyramids of Menakaure and Khafra)". The Giza Necropolis (pyramids of Giza) is an archeological site on the Giza Plateau, on the outskirts of Cairo, Egypt. This complex of ancient monuments includes the three pyramid complexes known as the Great Pyramids, the massive sculpture known as the Great Sphinx, several cemeteries, a workers' village and an industrial complex. Menkaure's pyramid complex consists of a Valley Temple, a causeway, a mortuary temple, and the king's pyramid. Khafre's pyramid complex consists of a Valley temple (sometimes referred to as the Sphinx temple), a causeway, a mortuary temple and the king's pyramid. The Great Sphinx of Giza is a limestone statue of a reclining sphinx (a mythical creature with a lion's body and a human head) that stands on the west bank of the Nile. It is the largest monolith statue in the world, standing 241 feet long, 63 feet wide, 66 feet high. It is the oldest known monumental sculpture, and is commonly believed to have been built by ancient Egyptians of the Old Kingdom during the reign of the Pharaoh Khafra (2558-2532 BC). Photographed by Maison Bonfils, circa 1867 and 1899.
