Blacksmith, taken from De Magnete (1600) , a treatise on magnetism by the English physician and scientist William Gilbert. The blacksmith depicted here is hammering a bar of hot iron as it cools down while lined up in the north-south direction (Auster is south; Septentrio is a term for north). Gilbert noticed that such a bar became weakly magnetized. This image has been color-enhanced.
