A normal male karyotype; male chromosomes arranged in homologous pairs. Each member of a homologous pair is similar in length & banding pattern. Certain genetic disorders can be identified by detection of abnormal gene products. Each human cell contains 46 chromosomes in total, 23 of maternal & 23 of paternal origin. An extra chromosome signifies a genetic abnormality.
