Scanning electron micrograph of a the proboscis of a mosquito, magnified 1400x at 8" x 10". The fused labium forms a channel through which the hypopharynx projects. The mosquito penetrates the skin with its proboscis and the trinagular tip of the hypopharynx is secured subcutaneously, which causes itching of the skin. As the blood is sucked, an anticoagulant is added by the mosquito which prevents clotting of the blood. The fine hairs and scales which beautifully decorate the proboscis like a candle primarily serve as sensory receptors. Some species of mosquito are vectors of human disease such as malaria.
