The parenchyma, essential elements, of the gland consists of two cell types - the principal cells, which are basophilic, easily stained by basic dyes, and the oxyphil cells that have a more prominent eosinophilic, easily stained by eosin or other acid dyes, cytoplasm. Connective tissue containing blood vessels sits between the lobes of the gland.
