Anaphase of cell mitosis. Light micrograph of a whitefish cell (Coregonus sp.) undergoing cell division (mitosis). A cell in the latter stages of mitosis, known as anaphase, is seen here. Individual chromosomes can be seen within the cell as black thread-like structures (at center). The chromosomes have split into two and are being pulled to either extremity of the cell by a tubular structure known as a spindle (not visible here). Once separated, membranes will develop around each "daughter" nucleus and the cell will split into two genetically identical cells. Magnification: x315 at 35mm size.
