Latex is produced in milkweed in vessels or special cells called laticifers, single cells, or strings of cells that form tubes, canals, or networks in various plant organs. Latex is a thick, creamy white, milky emulsion, although sometimes it may be a thin, clear, yellow or orange, aqueous suspension. In humans, milkweed latex can produce dermatitis in susceptible individuals. Native Americans used milkweed latex to remove corns and calluses. Milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) latex flowing from leaves cut was fixed with glutaraldehyde, captured on a polyacetate filter and examined by SEM. The corpuscular composition of the latex is shown. Image width: 12.8 micrometers. Magnification: 9260x if the image is printed 10 cm wide. Bar: 2 micrometers. The nanoparticles are mostly 80 to 420 nm in diameter.
