Rain in desert shrubland fills a canegrass depression or claypan in Nocoleche Nature Reserve, interior New South Wales, Australia, vegetated with canegrass (Eragrostis australasica) and fringed by black box (Eucalyptus largiflorens). Such wetlands only fill after infrequent rain, but provide temporary habitat for nomadic or aestivating wildlife. If no more rain falls, the summer sun and dry winds will evaporate the water within weeks, but crustaceans and frogs will have bred, and nomadic waterbirds will move on.
