The shortgrass prairie in Theodore Roosevelt National Park, North Dakota, is dominated by blue grama (Bouteloua graciliis) and buffalo grass (Buchloe dactyloides). Grass protects this very dry area, which receives an average of 12 to 20 inches of rain each year, from erosion. One square meter of grass may have five miles of roots below the surface.
