Halophytic plants such as samphire (Halosarcia sp.) and grasses on part of the vast saltmarsh wetland inshore of the Gulf of Carpentaria, Queensland, Australia. These wetlands are important beef cattle grazing rangeland and are burnt annually to produce fresh green growth (on the right). This broad coastal plain transforms into a huge wetland when the wet season spring tides and river floodwaters inundate the region.
