Black Mangrove (Avicennia germinans), showing the numerous finger-like aerial roots called pneumatophores. These roots absorb oxygen for the subterranean root structure. Photo taken in Bermuda at low tide when these roots are fully exposed. Bermuda is the furthest north that mangroves can be found. The Black Mangrove is widespread in coastal tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas and Africa where it is often found in association with the Red Mangrove.
