Tourists stand in front of the largest specimen of kauri tree (Agathis australis) in New Zealand, known as "Tane Mahuta," (meaning God of the Forest in Maori) in Waipoua Kauri Forest. The 1200 year old tree has a height of 51 meters and has a circumference of almost 14 meters. Once common in Australia as well as New Zealand, kauri forests were decimated by loggers and gum diggers in the early 20th century. Kauri forests are now confined to the northern part of New Zealand's North Island.
