Kinta weed (Papilionanthe hookeriana / Vanda hookeriana) used to be a very abundant terrestrial and semi-aquatic orchid growing in the swamps of the Kinta Valley, Perak, Malaysia. It is now much less common and threatened by land development. In 1893 this orchid was hybridized with another Papilionanthe to create Papilionanthe Miss Joaquim. In the 1930s this hybrid started the commercial orchid industry in Hawaii. The hybrid is also the national flower of Singapore.
