These galls are abnormal, deformed leaves. The abnormal growth is caused by the larva of a parasitic wasp, Amphibolips confluenta, that, after an egg has been laid in a leaf vein, secretes a chemical that causes the leaf to grow as a round papery home for the larva. The larva feeds on the inside of the gall and emerges, upon maturing, into an adult wasp.
