Caesalpinia pulcherrima, Pride of Barbados, also called dwarf poinciana and red bird of paradise, is a small evergreen perennial shrub or tree. It originates from the West Indies and stands 10 - 15 feet high with alternate, bipinnate leaves. The stem and branches are armed with spines. This graceful tree flowers throughout the year and is a beautiful garden plant. It is a medicinal plant used as a purgative, anti-inflammatory, antiviral and antimicrobial.
