Recently germinated Bean, (Phaseolus vulgaris), and corn, (Zea mays), seedlings. The monocot, the corn, shows a single coleoptile rising from the endosperm containing seed. The dicot, the bean, shows a hypocotyl growing down from the seed head which contains the two cotyledons.
