Optical activity. Optical activity of sugar is demonstrated by placing a beaker with sugar solution between two linear polarizers. Depending on the angle between the polarizers' axes, the solution is seen to have a color tint. Here the left panel shows a brownish tint and the right panel shows a bluish tint.
