Foucault's pendulum, named after its inventor, the 19th-century French physicist L矇on Foucault, who devised it to demonstrate Earth's rotation. It is essentially a tall pendulum free to oscillate in any vertical plane. The plane in which the pendulum swings rotates with time because of Earth's daily rotation. This one is on display at the California Academy of Sciences, San Francisco, California, USA.
