Gosses Bluff in the Northern Territory of Australia is an astrobleme caused by the impact of a large meteorite, asteroid or comet some 143 million years ago. It created a crater 22km in diameter that has been obliterated by erosion. The present structure which is 5km in diameter and 150m high is believed to be the eroded remains of the the original crater's central uplift. Gosses Bluff is a sacred site to the local Aboriginals.
