Artwork showing the instruments of the Planck Space Observatory. Launched in 2009, Planck is surveying the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), radiation left over from the big bang. Located in the focal plane of the telescope, Planck's Low Frequency Instrument (LFI) and High Frequency Instrument (HFI) are equipped with a total of 74 detectors covering nine frequency channels.
