The color in this gamma-ray map of the sky runs from white for the brightest regions through red, yellow and blue for the darkest regions. The bright horizontal band at center shows the emission of our galaxy, the Milky Way. Several of the white spots along it, such as the two at extreme right, are pulsars, which are rapidly spinning neutron stars. The other bright sources in the sky are mostly associated with quasars, which are thought to be very distant galaxies. Their gamma emission is probably powered by a supermassive black hole found in their core. This image is based on data collected by the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory satellite.
