Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of the larva of the plum fruit moth (Grapholita funebrana). This is a common pest attacking plum, gage, damson and occasionally peach. The female lays her eggs at the base of the fruit stalk and the larvae hatch ten days later and immediately enter the fruit and burrow towards the stone. The larvae are 10-12mm long. A caterpillar is an eruciform larva, one that has a well-developed head and mouth. Most caterpillars have very simples eyes (brown) on each side of their head. These light sensitive structures are called ocelli or stemmata. It is thought they only sense light and dark, and cannot distinguish shapes or colour. Magnification: x70 when printed at 10cm wide.
