Great Crested Grebe - with young on back (Podiceps cristatus). Spain. Found in Europe, South Africa and Australia. Strictly aquatic and during breeding season usually occupy bodies of still fresh water. Mainly eats sizeable fish but also a wide range of insects and other aquatic invertebrates and adult and larvae of amphibians. Migratory and dispersive. Not globally threatened. Widespread decline in Europe during 19th century due to hunting for plume trade, has since recovered.
