woolly chafer - Adult (Sparrmannia flava). Mountain Zebra National Park, Eastern Cape, South Africa. Feeds on vegetation, flying at dusk or night; attracted to lights. 'Fur' covering insulates beetle from cold, enabling it to remain active longer into the night. Larvae live in burrows in soil feeding on dung pellets (especially of Springbok) collected from the surface. Occur in arid and semi-arid savanna and karoo.
