Indian troops on the march in September 1914. The Sikhs are identified by a stell quoit, the old-time national battlefield weapon of the Sikhs, in the Sepoy's turbans. In August 1914, as the German Army advanced through France and Belgium, more Allied troops were desperately needed for the Western Front - and the Indian Army seemed the obvious source.
