Photograph of Louis Lumiere (1865-1948), French pioneer of cinematography, scrutinising a strip of film. Together with his brother Auguste, Louis invented the cinematograph, the first machine to project moving pictures onto a screen with the first publicly viewed 'motion picture' taking place in December 1895. The Lumieres amassed a huge catalogue of newsreel shots from around the world and Louis directed 60 and produced some 2000 films.
