Photograph of the S.S. 'Baikal', ploughing through the ice of the frozen Lake Baikal, December 1900. This ship, seen with it's stern on the left, was built by the Newcastle firm of Sir William Armstrong, Whitworth and Co. for the Trans-Siberian railway. She was able to carry one passenger train and two goods trains across the frozen lake at thirteen knots, through ice three foot thick.
