Amelia Earhart (1897-1937) moments after she had completed her trans-Atlantic flight in 1928. Although only a passenger, Earhart was the first woman to fly the Atlantic. Bothered by the fact that her pilots on this historic journey had been given no credit, she resolved to fly solo, finally achieving her goal in May 1932 when she flew from Newfoundland to Northern Ireland. Earhart's plane went missing during a round-the-world flight with her navigator, Frederick Noonan in 1937.
