Engraving of Robert O'Hara Burke, the Irish explorer, pictured shortly before his death in 1861. Burke had emigrated to Australia in 1853 and whilst an inspector of police in Victoria he accepted the leadership, with William Wills, of an expedition to cross the continent from south to north. Burke, Wills and John King reached the north shore of Australia, but only King survived the return journey to Melbourne.
