Engraving showing Sir Henry Morton Stanley (1841-1904) (on left, raising cap) and his officers returning from the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition aboard the steam-ship 'Katoria', 1889. Stanley is seen on the deck of the ship, waving goodbye to Mombasa, East Africa. Emin Pasha (1840-1892), the German doctor, explorer, linguist and Governor of the Egyptian Equatorial Province had retreated to Wadelai, near Lake Albert, with 10,000 followers during the Mahdi Rising of the mid-1880's. Cut off from all communication Emin Pasha was considered lost, so the British government sent out a rescue party led by Stanley, the Anglo-American explorer and journalist.
