Photograph showing men, formerly soldiers of the Republican Army, who became refugees at the end of the Spanish Civil War, in Perthus, France, 1939. When the Nationalist Army finally won the Spanish Civil War, in 1939, a great number of the defeated Republican soldiers fled to France. They feared (correctly) that the blood-letting would continue until General Franco and the Nationalists felt they had driven socialism and the Republicans from Spain.
