Princess Elizabeth (right) and Princess Margaret Rose at the last of the Duke of York's Camps, at Balmoral in August 1939. In 1919, the Princesses' father, then Duke of York, had become President of the Boys' Welfare Association - a position he would accept only on condition that no ceremonial would be attached. He wanted to draw closer to ordinary people and devoted time and consideration to the project for the next twenty years, visiting factories and institutions and organsing annual camps for boys in their late teens - half from industrial backgrounds and half from public schools. The camps were held in the grounds of Balmoral and he and his family acted as hosts and joined in with many of the activities.
